It would be easy to call Reigning Sound’s first record in five years a reaction to the last record founder/songwriter/sole original member Greg Cartwright made with his reunited legendary garage rock trio The Oblivians in 2013. While The Oblivians were/are thrashy/fuzzy punk rock outta the garage, Shattered is so much more soulful, melodic, and slower. But truth is the record is pretty much further in the direction RS was heading on their last lp, 2009’s brilliant, Love & Curses. The songs, lyrics and melody really are allowed to shine, the musicianship is spectacular, and never overplayed, but rather complimentary to one another.

Books, Not Bands: Reading In The Garage With “We Never Learn”

The title of this article is deceiving: I don’t have a garage. If I did, I’m damn sure I wouldn’t read inside one. The prospect of reclining on a pile of tools or sitting on top of a spare tire, slowly paging through a good read as the smell of oil pooling on the floor drifts up my nose… well, it doesn’t seem nearly as attractive as reading on the comfort of my couch. I just threw that in to be a shitty subtitle, which gives me something in common with the book I just finished reading, Eric Davidson’s We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001.
